Keçiborlu which is the most important lavender cultivator of Turkey will be a rural tourism destination that is worth visiting. Thus the project will be sustainable and it will contribute to overcome immigration, unemployment and development problems in the region.
Why Should You be Considered for the Award?
Although the lavender has been cultivated in the village for decades, it has never been taken in agricultural tourism in regional or national level. Lavender fields have become an innovation for Turkey's tourism activities. Transportation in the region, sub-structural works, regional and rural development, women's contribution to economy, development of social activities and rising the quality of education children were ensured as a result of the project. Women's cooperative is a good example of collective works in the world. When people of the village noticed the importance of the lavender, they began to more responsible and respective about the lavender. The potential lavender fields were preserved and new ones were planted. Lavender production increased in 2016 when compared with 2015. Sustainability of the project can be observed with the number of visitors of the village. 20.000 people visited the village in 2016. The number of the visitors in 2017 is 140.000. The number of the visitors in 2018 is 254.000. The number of the visitors in 2019 is 1.000.000. Meanwhile another indicator for sustainability is the amount of lavender fields. The acreage of the lavender fields in 2015 was 2.200.000sqm. The acreage of the fields increased to 5.000.000sqm in 2019. That proportion means more than 130% increase in a year. The village had no economical and touristic shops in 2015. But 30 shops which were supervised by Finance Ministry exist in the village now. The blooming period and harvesting period of the lavender creates a big touristic movement in the city. This movement can be observed in the numbers of tourists in Isparta. Before the project carried out, local people of the village were used to cultivate lavender, rose and other grain species. But their products were rarely sold. After the project, local people began to obtain income from touristic activities. Moreover the products, which were hardly sold before, had opportunity to be sold. The new designed products which are made of rose and lavender were marketed as high value added goods. After the project, local of the village realised the importance of lavender when they obtained income from the lavender and new lavender cultivating areas have been occurred. The newly occurred lavender areas have supplied a new habitat for bees and other animals. Since lavender cultivating doesn’t consist of any fertilizer and herbicide, pesticide or other toxic substances. Prosperity of the people in the village has been raised as a good sample to rural development in the world. Social and cultural activities were fulfilled by protecting traditions of the region. Lavender harvesting festival was celebrated for the first time and local people eagerly attended to the activity. The visitors of the village not only visit lavender fields and take photos, but also have a vacation at home pensions together with local people and observe the culture of the villagers. Visitors also contribute to budgets of villagers by buying souvenirs from the village. Thanks to advertisements on web sites and social media, bloggers, journalists and travellers visited the region. Moreover, the role of the women in the rural development was shown by making news on international agencies such as Bloomberg, Skyscanner, Epa and almost all national newspapers and magazines in Turkey. Local people of the village obtained income by establishing women cooperative, home pensions and local works and welfare of the people has risen on positive way
