What are the Activities Performed by You in Ecotourism Field?
The village of Kosovo is situated in the central area of the beautiful Rhodope Mountains in Southern Bulgaria. The village is a living museum of the typical Bulgarian Renaissance architecture. There are 63 cultural monuments in the village, five of them of national importance. Two of those buildings – the Church of the Assumption (1851) and the Hadjiyska House (1853) -the most emblematic in the Kosovo Houses Complex, were build by the famous Hadji Georgi Stanchovski, who had also built the most beautiful houses in Old Plovdiv. In the Kosovo Houses complex our guests experience unforgettable moments enjoying the Rhodopean nature, customs and history. They will also taste the best of the traditional local cuisine. The complex comprises 3 authentic houses fully renovated and modernized to meet the requirements of the modern traveler, yet restored in compliance with the old traditional Rhodopean style- with wood and stone only. The Hadjiyska house is the most iconic house, with many authentic elements conserved and restored: the old fireplace, the stone walls, trimmer joists, chimneys, ceilings, tile-stones and other details have been conserved or restored just like the original; the old barn has been converted into a tavern and there is a real 'cheverme' (old style fireplace barbecue used to roast meat on a spit). The Gavatovska house is one of the most attractive houses in the village built on several levels with a tavern on the ground floor. The Elinovska House, a former monastery school, is situated on the very top of a hill and offers amazing panoramic views of the area from its large terrace. · Environmental development and protection: o Finding and making new eco-trails and designating them for our tourists; o Taking care of the nearby chapels (the village of Kosovo is surrounded by 4 little chapels situated up in the mountain); o Having in place bird and animal feeders (in the nearby forest one can spot fallow deer, European bison, boars); o Wildlife cameras in the nearby forest ; o Regularly organizing group cleaning activities maintaining the village and the surrounding mountain areas trash free; o Recycling all plastic waste and having in place compost for all other organic waste; o Having in place water saving technology; · Support local economy and community: o Our entire personnel is employed within the village or nearby villages; o We use only locally produced fresh ingredients, from the village or the surrounding mountain region, not farther than 30 kilometers. Our bread is made in the nearby village of Hvoyna, prepared with home-made yeast. We also make our own yoghurt, with milk from the cow farm in the village; our home made fruit jams are well known in the area. We also love mushrooms- in the woods, surrounding Kosovo village you can find various sorts. We gather more than 20 sorts of mushrooms and marinate them. During certain seasons, we add fresh mushroom dishes in the menu. Another notable thing is the mountain tea ("Murskalski" tea or " Sideritis Scardica") we make ourselves. With the help of the village folk we gather aromatic herbs and prepare our own unique blend. We source our vegetables from villages, surrounding the Asenovgrad municipality. We truly strive to support local produce and aim to avoid products, which damage the environment; o Organizing tours to nearby small farms and workshops (e.g. crafting traditional bulgarian bagpipe, weaving, woodcarving, etc. ) to enrich the experience and knowledge first-hand for our guests; they get to meet and support the local farmers and artisans; o Local folk ensemble (singers and bagpipe performers )- part of the unique entertainment for the guests of our restaurant are local folk ensembles from nearby villages whom we hire on weekly basis to perform; o Horseback riding- sending business to a nearby horseback riding company or renting horses from them; · Activities: there is a lot to do in the area - one can go horseback riding, fishing, bird watching, winter sports, rock climbing, visit the popular mineral baths, follow the hiking eco- trails around the village or take a sightseeing tour to various spiritual, historical and nature sites in the Rhodope Mountains. · We aim to pass our knowledge and traditions to every person who visits our village. We take the time to explain in details the history of Kosovo village and the surroundings. We also take pride in educating and inspiring all of our guests (40% of which are foreigners) to learn more about the Bulgarian history and traditions.
